Game Soundtrack of the Week - 30/08/2018

GAME SOUNDTRACK OF THE WEEK - 30/08/2018
MEDAL OF HONOR GAME SOUNDTRACK
You join me today with the next installment of Game Soundtrack of the week. This week's Game Soundtrack is Medal of Honor.

Medal of Honor (1999 video game).png

The game itself is a first-person shooter set during WW2. You play an OSS soldier who is tasked with infiltrating different enemy positions and destroying them. It is mainly targeted at the Nazi's (enemy-wise). The game itself was released in 1999 in the EU for the PlayStation.

The soundtrack was composed by Michael Giacchino, who recently composed the Rogue One soundtrack. The soundtrack is composed of 20 tracks which can be heard throughout the game. My favourite track is 'Rescuing the G3 officer'. This is because it was my favourite level of the game.

You can have a little listen here: https://youtu.be/C3dYiawUXJA

So that does it for this short but sweet game soundtrack of the week. Join us next time for another Potter walkthrough :).

So until next time,

Game of the Week - 29/08/18

GAME OF THE WEEK - 29/08/2018
STAR WARS: FORCE UNLEASHED
Today brings you the game of the week! This week's game of the week is the game, Star Wars: Force Unleashed.

The Force Unleashed.jpg

This game was released in 2008 and it is an action-adventure game. You may be wondering why is this the game of the week and not retro game of the week? Well that is because the game itself was released on Xbox 360, which still has games which are currently being produced.

The plot of the game is that you take on the role of Starkiller, Darth Vader's secret apprentice. The main character is usually sent in to undertake missions which have been set by Vader. Vader's only concern is that he has to keep Starkiller a secret from the Emperor. This is because Vader wants Starkiller to help him kill the Emperor.

What I like about this game is that there is an option to choose between the light and dark side right at the end of the game. I like this because it allows you to choose the side that you love the most (the light side will always be my favourite).

That end's today's game of the week. Stay tuned for my next blog post which is most likely going to be Game Soundtrack of the Week.

Retro Game of the Week - 28/08/2018

RETRO GAME OF THE WEEK 28/08/2018
THE SIMPSONS: HIT AND RUN
It's that time of the week when we cover this week's retro game of the week. This week it is the classic The Simpsons: Hit and Run game from 2003.

Image result for the simpsons hit and run

The game was released on the PlayStation 2, Windows, Xbox and GameCube. The game itself was modelled after the Grand Theft Auto games but it featured the Simpsons family as the playable characters.

The plot to the game was that there were mysterious vans appearing in Springfield and this led to stranger things like Crop circles. The Simpsons became curious, so them and their friend Apu decided to investigate the strange goings on.

In the game itself you can play as Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart and Apu. These characters all had their own 'episode' so to speak in where they would drive around and complete missions to finish their episode. Not only do you drive around in your car, smashing objects and hitting pedestrians, but you can also walk around and explore Springfield.

You can earn coins and spend them on clothes for the character or on new cars. One of the cars that you can purchase is Homer's Plow King truck.

Personally, I love this game as it has some of the best quotes such as 'I am Evil Homer' or 'I have no insurance!' I give this game a 5 out of 5 as it is one of the classics that everyone played as a kid.

That does it for this week's retro game of the week. Stay tuned for the next blog post.

Until next time,

Retro Game of the Week - 14/08/2018

RETRO GAME OF THE WEEK - 14/08/2018
LEGO STAR WARS: THE VIDEO GAME
This week's retro game is Lego Star Wars: The Video Game, a game that I remember playing a lot in my childhood. This game was released in 2005 on the Gameboy Advanced, Windows computers, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox and Mac OS X.

Legostarwarsthevideogame.jpg
Lego Star Wars: The Video Game was the first of the Lego video games to be produced by the company Traveller's Tales (or TT games), who would then go on and produce all of the future Lego games.

The game itself is set in the prequel trilogy (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith). The aim of the game is for the players to play through the different chapters of the movies. Each of the movies were called 'Episodes' (like in real life) and then those episodes were broken down into 'Chapters'. The players also walk around collecting studs (the Lego game's currency) and unlocking Free Play mode, which allows the player to choose any character that they have unlocked to play on that level.

This game was a childhood favourite of mine as I always loved blowing things up with the lightsabers. I also remember it as one of the first Lego games that I played, as my dad had it on the PlayStation 2. My favourite level on it was probably the Invasion of Naboo level as I love the design of the city, but I also loved the hub, Dexter's Diner.

So that does it for today's short but sweet retro game of the week. I hope you enjoyed it and stay tuned for my next blog post.

Game Soundtrack of the Week - 13/08/2018

GAME SOUNDTRACK OF THE WEEK -13/08/2018
New for this week is a weekly segment called Game Soundtrack of the week. This highlights the soundtrack to a video game that I have featured in the past or I am going to feature in the future. This week's game soundtrack is Stuart Little 3 Big Photo Adventure.

This game was released for the PlayStation 2 all the way back in 2005. You took control of Stuart and tried to collect photos for his brother George's photo album. It was a brilliant game and I loved it. The soundtrack was composed by Game Audio Ltd.

My personal favourite track on this soundtrack is The House, as that is also one of my favourite levels of the game. It is very up-beat and I have fond memories of using Skateboarder Stuart around the house.

PLAY Expo London 2018 - Part 2: The Haul/Pickups

PLAY Expo London 2018 - Part 2: The Haul/Pickups
So here's my part 2 of my PLAY Expo coverage. This blog post covers all of my purchases from the show. So let's dive into it.

1) Gameboy Advance Games
I've split this post into sections depending on what console they're for and what better way to start but with some GBA game purchases. The first game that I purchased for my GBA was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
This game came complete in a box with an instruction manual and the game cartridge. This game is one of my favourites and I own it on PS, PS2 and PC already so I brought the GBA version so I can play it on the go.

The overall cost was £10.

The next game that I brought on GBA was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (chain much?).

This game also came complete in a box with the instruction manual and the game cartridge. This game is another one of my favourites, although I only own this on PS2.

The overall cost was £8.

GBA Games total = £18

2) PlayStation 2 Games
The next part of the pickups is the PS2 games. The first PS2 game that I purchased was The Simpsons Hit & Run.
This game came is an all time favourite of mine, as it has some of the best quotes (I am Evil Homer!). This game comes with the manual and game disc in the PAL region.

The overall cost was £5.

The next game that I purchased for the PS2 was Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup.

This game is one of the only Harry Potter games that I never owned myself, but I have played it before. (Que shocked noises). This game comes with the manual and game disk in the PAL region, same as the Simpsons Hit & Run Game.

The overall cost was £5.

PS2 Games total = £10

3) PlayStation Games
This next part of the blog is a bit longer than the other part. This is due to the fact I was primarily looking for PlayStation games in the first place. The first game I purchased was Crash Bandicoot.

This game is one that I have been after for a long game. This is probably because of the sound effects and music that the game had as well as the gameplay. This game comes with the box, manual and PAL game disc. The demo disc is missing however, but I'm not too fussed because I just wanted to play the game.

The overall cost was £30.

The next game that I purchased was Silent Hill.

This game is one that was recommended by my dad due to the fact that I wanted to try Resident Evil and my dad had said that this was similar to RE and I could try this game if I wanted a horror game. It comes with the manual and the platinum version of the game, in the PAL region.

The overall cost was £25.

The third game I purchased was Resident Evil.

This game is a well known one for the PlayStation and I struggled to find it cheap anywhere. Then I found the copy I brought. No manual (who cares?) but it comes with the PAL region disk.

The overall cost...£9 (:O).

The fourth game I purchased was Tomb Raider.

This game is one of my favourites as I have Tomb Raider Anniversary on Xbox 360, but I decided to go back old school and get the first game in the series. This game was a part of the PlayStation Value Series and it came with the game manual

The overall cost was £9.

The last game that I purchased was Spyro the Dragon.

This game is another one that I wanted to play and this is after discovering the Skylanders game. This copy of the game does not include the manual but it does include the PAL region game disc.

The overall cost was £25.

PlayStation Games total = £98

Overall cost = £126

So that sums up our part 2 to the PLAY Expo London coverage. I hope you have enjoyed this and stay tuned for the next blog post.

So until next time,

PLAY Expo London 2018 - Part 1: The Show

PLAY Expo London 2018 - Part 1: The Show
Good evening everyone and welcome to another blog post. Today's post is split into two parts. This is because today I attended a games show called PLAY Expo in London. This show was dedicated to everything gaming. They had everything from pinball machines to arcade cabs to retro consoles. The next part is going over the merch that I bought at the show.

So let's dive into it! When I went in, we (myself and my dad) went straight to the pinball machines. I love pinball, so I spent most of my time on the machines and attempting to beat the high scores. The first machine we went on was one called Attack on Mars.

This machine was amazing. The different 'levels' so to speak were you protecting the different cities of the world. I didn't do as well as my dad as I only reached the America level, whereas my dad got to the Italy level. I love the backglass design due to the levels of detail on it.

Our next pinball game which we played was the Star Wars pinball edition.

This machine was one of my favourites. Firstly, it had a LED screen which produced a little video for mission selects and when you finish the game there is another little video. Secondly, I love the theming inside the machine. There is a mini death star which you had to send the ball through and I thought that it was great. I highly recommend playing this game if you ever see it, even if there is a queue for it. It is worth it.

The next pinball machine that I tackled was a Batman themed one.

This machine was themed after the 1995 film, Batman Forever and the machine featured everyone's favourite caped crusader, Batman. What made me love this machine even more than the theming inside is that the plunger was shaped like Batman's Batwing. Awesome!

After tackling some pinball machines, my dad and I decided to go and venture into the depths of the arcade cabs. The first cab that we came across was one for Pac-Mania. Unfortunately, this cab was not working but I took a photo anyway because I thought it looked cool.

I love it how all of the ghosts have names! My favourite is Inky (on the left in the middle).

The first machine that I decided to play was called Pac and Paint. I loved this game. The aim of the game was to paint all of the maze without being caught by the enemies. I never got past the first level, but it was fun enough to play.

The next machine that I played was called Mappy. This was one weird game, I must admit, but it was fun to play. You controlled a mouse who had to recover certain items within the level. To get to the different floors, you used a trampoline to bounce up to reach them. I also, had never reached past the first level of the game.

After playing Mappy for a bit, my dad introduced me to one of his favourite games from when he was younger. I now present to you Rally-X. The aim of this game is to drive a rally car around the track and to collect flags. You also have to avoid other rally drivers, as you do lose lives if they collide with you. This game was extremely fun and addictive to play.

Before we went to lunch, we played one more pinball machine and it was called White Water.

This machine was also an awesome design, as it reminded me of River Rapids rides that you find at theme parks. I didn't do as well as my dad, but I still had fun playing it.

After tiring ourselves in the late morning/early afternoon with pinball and arcade machines, we went for lunch in the food courts that the site had. I had a very nice Chicken Burrito for my lunch, as did my dad. We continued our adventure with our full stomachs and our next stop was Space Invaders.

Space Invaders has always been a favourite in my family, so when I saw the cab, I just had to play it. What I like about this game is that you can do 2 players, which meant that myself and my dad could play together. I didn't go further than the 1st level, but my dad got to the 2nd level.

After shooting some aliens, I decided to keep to the space theming and play some Zaxxon.

This game was fun, as we had to pilot a ship and blow up the enemy's weapons. I found this game extremely addictive as I wanted to see if I could get past the first level, which I couldn't. Nevertheless, it was really fun to play.

After tiring ourselves out with arcade cabs, we decided to go and hit the retro consoles. This was the part I was most looking forward to and I was not disappointed. The first game that we played was on the Sega Mega Drive and it was called Alien Storm.

This game was fun to play as you had to defend your city from an alien invasion. I played as the character Karla (or Karen as she's known in some versions, take your pick on the name you prefer) and you have to play your way through the missions. I got to mission 4 before I died.

The next game that I decided to play was Soul Blade on the PlayStation.

This game is your generic beat 'em up which you can find anywhere. In this game, myself and my dad played battle mode where we did the best of three. I won the first round, but my dad beat me in the other two rounds. I played as the character Siegfried. He looked cool.

I then proceeded to become distracted when my dad had attempted to show me a point and click game. The cause of the distraction was Theme Park on the PC!

This game has always been one of my favourites. I love the creation side to these sort of games and I love creating my own park. The only downside is that I only had the DS version which is a bit different to the PC version. However, I soon gained the hang of it and built a ride for my park, a haunted house.

The next area that we had a look around was the indie area. This is where all of the small developers come together and showcase their games. One game that I am going to give a special mention to is The Mystery of Woolly Mountain. This game brings back the point and click genre to the modern day and you are playing as an Explorer who is trying to find the Witch of the Mountain. I only got to play the demo version, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The game is due for release in the New Year at the moment.

We then proceeded to have a look at the traders and buy lots of cool items, which I'll cover in my next blog post, so stay tuned!

After shopping for lots of bits, we went back to the arcade section where I decided to play some racing cabs. The first racing cab that I played was Enduro Racer.

This cab was basically a motocross racing game. The player has to race their bike to the finish avoiding logs in the process. This game was hard to complete, as I couldn't get the hang of turning on the game. But I did discover one thing, I could do wheelies :D.

The next racing game that I tackled was Power Drift.

This game was fun as you had to race other drivers around a circuit, but your car did power drifts around the corner. The only downside to this game is that in order to advance through the levels you had to be in a certain position when finishing, i.e. 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

Next, we went back over to the pinball machines to play some more games.

The machines that we played were The Machine Bride of Pin-Bot and The Phantom of The Opera. We played both of these machines on multiplayer where both myself and my dad got competitive on who would win and beat the high score.

Next, I played a game called Vanguard.

In this game we had to shoot enemies, using four buttons which sent lasers in different directions. We were also controlling a ship, so we had to avoid the enemies shots. I nearly got to the second level of the game, but I died last minute, so I couldn't complete any more missions.

Feeling in a spacey mood, I decided to play the arcade version of Star Wars

This game was awesome as you had to control an x-wing and destroy tie-fighters as well as the death star. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and I also loved the joystick as it was modelled like the x-wing controller from the movies.

After playing this machine, I decided to play some of the Simpsons pinball, as there was no queue. I loved this game as the theming inside the case was awesome and the machine kept on blasting out quotes from the TV show. Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of the machine.

Before we left the show we played on three last pinball machines.
These machines were Twilight Zone, Goldeneye 007 and Scared Stiff. I loved all of the machines, the Scared Stiff one for the dead fingers as flippers, the Goldeneye 007 one for the Gun plunger, and the Twilight Zone one for just being awesome!

So at the end of a long day, the show had ended, which gave me the opportunity to snap a quick picture of the pinball machines when all of the lights had been switched back on.

I loved this show, as it was an enjoyable atmosphere with something to do for everyone of all ages. It's a shame I couldn't play all of the systems, but maybe next year I'll get a weekend ticket so I can do everything.

So that does it for today's blog post. Stay tuned for part 2 of my PLAY Expo adventure, which will cover my haul of goods that I got.

So until next time,
Peace Out - Geekette

Retro Console of the Month - August

RETRO CONSOLE OF THE MONTH - AUGUST
NINTENDO DS
I'm back with another retro console of the month and this month's retro console is the Nintendo DS! This was one of my first handheld consoles that I owned with a huge selection of games on it. So let's dive into the history.

Nintendo-DS-Fat-Blue.jpg
The Nintendo DS, originally released by Nintendo in 2004, but it didn't come to Europe until 2005 (*insert sad face here*).  Talks about releasing the DS were dating all the way back from 2002, when the former head of Nintendo talked about releasing a dual-screen handheld console. The console's prototype was shown at E3 2004 and released in Japan and North America later that year.

Fun Fact: DS stands for Dual-Screen or Developer's System. Take your pick. It took me until today's research to find out what DS stood for (facepalm).

The best selling game for the DS was New Super Mario Bros, which sold 30.80 million copies :O.

The NDS had 3 different redesigns; the DS lite (I had 2 of these), DSi and DSi XL.
Nintendo-DS-Lite-Black-Open.jpg
DS Lite

My favourite game on the DS is Professor Layton and the Curious Village. This has to be my favourite because I love the puzzle solving aspect of Professor Layton, although I did find a lot of the puzzles very hard to complete.
Professor Layton and the Curious Village NA Boxart.JPG
So that does it for this month's retro console! Join me for the retro game of the week and the next installment of my Harry Potter PS2 walkthrough :D Yay!

Until next time,
Peace Out - Geekette
